Mobile subscribers registered in your name have this important news, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has increased its grip on the number of SIM cards. DoT issued a new direction regarding the number of mobile connections. Under this, a total of 9 SIM cards will be issued to a person across the country. However, in licensed service area of Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East, a person can register 6 SIM cards.

Can't take new connection after 9 SIMs

DoT's new instructions say that if you have already taken SIM cards up to the limit of (9 for general areas, 6 for J&K, Assam & North East), then you will not be able to take any new mobile number. If due to some technical problem a connection is activated beyond the limit, then the connections going beyond the limit can be disconnected.
With these instructions, telecom companies will identify customers up to this limit using the 'Digital Intelligence Platform' (DIP). Through DIP, telecom companies will identify such customers who have taken multiple SIM cards registered in their name from different companies and service areas.

Customer pictures will be available on DIP from August 23

Under the DoT circular issued on August 17, 2026, from August 23, 2026, customers with mobile connections within the limit will have their representative photographs available on the DIP. Telecom companies will compare the pictures and check the new connection of any person.

Telecom Companies will take action from August 24

DoT said in the circular that telecom companies should deploy technical systems by August 24, 2026 to stop the provision of mobile connections to the customers who exceed the prescribed limit. In the first round, this can be done for the next day, and the deadline for implementing it in real-time has been set by November 30, 2026.

Why this decision was taken

The intention behind DoT's this action is that the number of mobile connections can be monitored better and mobile phone connections used in fraudulent activities can also be tightened and many connections taken in the name of one person can also be easily tracked. Therefore, if you have multiple SIM cards, you should check how many SIM cards you have, and if there is any number that you do not use, then definitely take action to deactivate it.
