Mumbai : There is a lot of discussion around Ranbir Kapoor’s upcoming film ‘Ramayana’ these days. In the meantime, a recent report on another old, unfinished Bollywood film has surfaced in the headlines. You’d hardly be surprised to know that back in the 1990s, a film in which superstar Salman Khan played Lord Ram… but hey wait, he never played him.
There was going to be an ambitious project where he was to be cast as Lord Ram.
The film was directed by his brother Sohail Khan, but alas, had to be Shelved before its release.
Film 40 per cent complete
Reports mention that the big budget movie was shot, and some 40 percent completed. A picture of Salman Khan, shootin as Lord Ram, and also some other sequences featuring his Lord Ram persona, were part of it. Unfortunately, for various reasons, this massive project couldn’t progress as much as intended.
Why did film shelved?
It was allegedly rumoured that while making 'Ramayana', a romantic connection had formed between Sohail Khan and actress Pooja Bhatt. However, the relationship may have earned opposition from the family, altering the course of things. It is often rumoured the film was called off after Pooja Bhatt exited the movie, though these reports could not be independently verified by us.

This film intended to have Salman Khan as Lord Ram, Mata Sita was rumored to be cast as Sonali Bendre and there was a key role for Pooja Bhatt. This project would be remembered in a way, for being one ofBollywood’s biggest epic ventures.
After three decades, Ranbir Kapoor takes the charge
And this is not quite the end of the story! Almost three decades later, filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari's 'Ramayana' is ready for its release, with Ranbir Kapoor portraying Lord Ram, and his love interest, Mata Sita played by Sai Pallavi, while Yash essays Ravana. The first instalment is Scheduled to release in theatres on November 6, 2026.
