Delhi HC Raps Richa Chadha Over Flight Row Allegations

Richa Chadha Faces Court Rebuke Over Flight Allegations Post
The Delhi High Court has pulled up actor Richa Chadha for sharing unverified claims of sexual misconduct linked to a Delhi–Mumbai flight incident. The court noted that her repost, accompanied by the phrase “Make him famous”, fueled online shaming and encouraged digital vigilantism, placing her under judicial scrutiny
The controversy stems from a March 11 incident, when a journalist accused a co-passenger of inappropriate conduct during a Delhi–Mumbai flight. The journalist posted the allegations on X, naming the man, sharing his photo, and detailing his professional background. The claims quickly went viral, amplified by media outlets and social media users.
Actor Richa Chadha was among those who reposted the accusation, adding the remark “Make him famous.” This comment later became central to a defamation suit filed by the accused, who denied the allegations, asserting he had remained seated and asleep before landing.
On March 20, Justice Vikas Mahajan of the Delhi High Court observed that Chadha’s repost went beyond free speech, calling her words “instigatory” and a trigger for digital vigilantism. The court stressed that public figures must exercise caution before amplifying serious charges, noting: “A public figure bears a legal and moral responsibility to verify the veracity of facts before leveraging her platform to amplify grave accusations.”
The judge further remarked that such endorsements of unverified claims can cause “immediate, exponential, and incalculable harm” to reputations, underscoring the dangers of unchecked amplification in the digital age.
