Tamil Nadu will gift Gold Rings to newborns, Orders with two firms.
New Delhi : The government in Tamil Nadu will be rolling out a unique gift scheme to newborns in the state. Under this scheme all infants, will receive one gram of gold by the government. This scheme 'Thayamaman Thanga Mothiram' which in English mean "maternal uncle's gold ring", would commence from September 15, 2026.
The intent of the scheme would be to boost deliveries at government health facilities and celebrate the arrival of a new born with an extra special gifting ritual.
It is notable to mention that the Tamil Nadu government, have in the past few days already placed work orders forgold ringsunder the scheme with two firms.
1 Gramm Gold Ring
Each beneficiary will be awarded a one gram gold ring once they complete a term at a government hospital. From June to Sept 2026 alone 128,499 infants are entitled and thus 128,499 rings would be needed from both Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers in a ratio of 70 and 30 respectively for each firm.
755 Crore Yearly budget
While a yearly budget is anticipated around 755.83 crore the Tamil Nadu government is targeting for distribution of 441,667 rings in an entire year which also makes around220 croref or the first 128,499 rings from Jan to Sept 2026. This gold ring will have the value of one gram on market price of gold. The state has completed its tender process as well in buying gold rings under this scheme.
Joyalukkas is L1
While it stated that eleven firms participated in the bid opening July 14, the company "Joyalukkas" bid only0.01 for the costs relating to processing, insurance, transportation, packing, and BIS hallmarking excluding the price of gold and became L1 bidder (Lowest Bidder). Thus, "Joyalukkas" will be responsible for procuring 70 percent of the supply while Kalyan Jewellers will procure the remaining 30 percent.
All children Born after June 22 will have this scheme
All the infants who will be born after June 22, 2026 in a government health center will be covered under this scheme on September 15. This date will be the birthday celebration of the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu C N Annadurai. Also, this is the birthday celebration date of Tamil Nadu CM Joseph Vijay (June 22).

The state government, is aiming to increase credibility among commoners, to opt for public facilities and boost deliveries across state-owned hospital and also wish the mothers a gift for their motherhood. The idea stems from an ancient tradition in Tamil culture where the brother of the mother (mama/thambi) often gifts the child. In this respect to uphold traditions the Tamil Nadu government would be gifting one gram of gold ring on behalf of all the infants.
Scheme likely to start on Sept 15
The state of Tamil Nadu has began processing this scheme to all children born in state hospitals after 15 th sept, 2026 where in this month 128499 rings will be provided for June-Sept babies and onwards all eligible newborns born in state hospitals all year around will have receive one gram of gold ring.
