PM Modi on a Central Asia Visit, Focus on Trade and Defence
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on Tuesday for a four-day visit to countries in Central Asia and held discussions on deepening economic ties with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during a meeting in Tashkent. Areas for cooperation ranging from trade, tourism, health, energy to defence were part of their talks.
The Prime Minister’s visit marks a significant development to boost India's diplomatic and strategic engagement with nations of the region and is in line with India’s policy to broaden engagement in Central Asia with greater focus on security, investment and economic ties.
Next week the prime minister is travelling to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit to be held on August 31 and September 1. The Central Asia trip has come at a time when many countries in the region are working on stronger connectivity, greater energy cooperation and security partnerships.
