Major US Army Decision! South Korea's K9 Artillery to be Used in place of the M777; Why does this mean for India?

News: The US Army have made a breakthrough in upgrading their mobile artillery systems. They have chosen South Korea-based Hanwha Aerospace's mobile artillery system based on their K9 to undergo the prototyping stages. Upon further successful trials, the system will likely be introduced to serve in certain US Army units which currently use the towed howitzers, M777.

Hanwha Defense USA will first produce 6 prototypes with an option to provide 12 additional systems. This deal will potential be worth 262.9 million dollars in total, and US troops will trial this new system for roughly four years while seeing the overall capabilities, reliability and usage of the prototype.

What are K9's specifications?

Hanwha submitted their new K9MH as their offer to America; the K9MH is essentially an all-wheeled howitzer which aims to bring better mobile fighting capability and positioning to US artillery units. The family of K9's is a trusted tool already serving in several armed forces across the globe.

What this means for India.

This news has great significance to India also, as the Indian Armed Forces have been successfully using the K9 Vajra-T, an Indian-built variant of the K9, in alliance with the South Korean based artillery systems and made with local manufacturing with Larsen & Toubro. The possible adoption of the K9 variant by the US Army will cement South Korea's place among artillery manufactures and bring further global acceptance for their powerful, modern Artillery guns, but no doubt the final decision on the M777's future will only be declared after successful trials.
