Mrunal Thakur Slaps Legal Notice To AI Deepfakes, Said "Cease Immediately Or We Will Take Legal Action"
MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Mrunal Thakur has warned against the creation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven deepfakes after coming across such material on the internet. The Ladoo actress, on social media, stated that her image, video and identity are used through AI without proper authorization, and urged individuals to stop immediately or face legal action.
In an official statement posted on her social media, Mrunal Thakur said, “It has come to my notice that there is malicious circulation of my content using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies creating deepfake images or videos.” Clarifying further, Mrunal emphasized on the illegality of the practice and said, “Such actions involve the unauthorized use of my likeness and may cause significant harm and violations of my privacy and personal safety as per current laws.”
She appealed to everyone against this usage of her identity. She wrote, “I strongly condemn any act of creating, publishing, or circulating content featuring deepfake images/videos utilizing my identity or likeness through AI without my explicit consent. I request all platforms to cease immediately the distribution and dissemination of such content.”
Further issuing a formal legal notice via the post, Mrunal stated, “This post should be considered a formal legal notice. Should such activity continue despite this notice, legal measures would be taken against the perpetrators.”
It is not the first time when artists have become victim of deepfakes since artificial intelligence technology have become highly accessible to all with the advancement in it. Many have raised concerns. Mrunal Thakur is the latest Bollywood diva to address the problematic situation, sending out a clear message to respect artists' digital identity and prevent illegal uses of their online presence. The netizens also supports the actor as few said that creativity is possible through such AI technologies but none has right to misuse any person's identity.
