The Food and Drug Administration of Maharashtra state government has now banned sale of loose edible oil. The retailer should sale only packaged cooking oil. Order has been given from FDA on compliance of such measures.

Why banned the sale of loose oil in Maharashtra?

The largest challenge in the sale of loose oil are related to trackability and verifying the quality as per FDA. By selling loose oil the buyer can’t know the origin, storage conditions and expiry or best before date, whereas buying packaged oil label is there that contains all the necessary details to consumer so that consumer will take the right decision whether they have to buy the particular oil or not.

What will be the responsibility of the shopkeepers in this new order?

As per the new rule implemented by FDA now there is complete ban on the sale of loose cooking oil from the shop keepers and traders and they will be enforced to sell oil only in packing from from now on wards. All the necessary information regarding the source of oil etc should be kept mentioned at the packing, like the expiry date and origin. Now at such shopkeepers/traders, who have a dispenser for putting oil to consumer as per his requirement should give only packet oil and now he cannot sell loose oil with them, that will also hit at sales for the shops that provide bulk quantities through dispensers.

Why this decision is more significant for the customer?

Cooked oil is a product of the kitchen and its authenticity with concern to quantity, origin is vital. The customer, when, buying a package product with labels, can verify it if want the relevant information to make buying decision at the buying time, and not so possible if purchasing with loose oil for this decision.
